Visited the State Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg; and definitely, the scale of this museum is Amsterdam is not close to the state museum, in terms of 'treasures' being put in display. Indeed, the focus was rather different, too.
The two key sections of the exhibition were
- 1917. Romanovs & Revolution. The End of Monarchy
- While we were presented with stories of the history of Russian; however, there wasn't one that gave a good account of the life of rulers in Russian history. In this exhibition, we got to see the life of the Tsar Nicholas II - from marriage to succession to the throne, and how he was overthrown. Indeed, the killing of the royal family (in particular how the evidences were gotten rid of) made me wonder why killing could be so brutal and cruel!
- Portrait Gallery of the Golden Age
- I was quite lucky that I was in time for "The Night Watch" light show in the grand hall. In fact, there's where I got to see the full picture, with the "remaining" (related) paintings lined up around the entire hall. I guess my visit to the Rijksmuseum the day before had helped me to better understand and appreciate the story that the show aimed to convey. Art came alive in this presentation :)
