Day 1 (Tue 20170606) EYE Film Museum

An interesting museum that I would not have possibly visited if not because of its unique architecture.

I'm not a movie goer. I have not gone into a cinema for more than 10 years. Seriously, the only time I watch movies is when I'm in the plane!

The "I AMsterdam card" only allow access to common areas like the restaurant and museum shop but not the Exhibitions. Well, I think my 3 euros worth the value for money.

The main attraction was the Martin Scorsese Exhibition, that highlighted his life and works. In fact, I think the museum usher must be very surprised when I asked her what highlights should I look out for in the exhibition. While I had not watched any of the movies he directed, the exhibition indeed opened a whole new world to me and now I appreciate what directors do even more.

Through the exhibition, I learnt some qualities that an excellent director should possess. The details and degree of attention he paid to each aspect of the movie was incredible! Something that stood out was the extensive use of storyboards and the amount of details put in there. Another example is how he had paid attention to tattoos on the body of one of the characters - what each part of the tattoo symbolized, and even the choices of colour!

The other exhibition is Panorama.
A highlight here is the equipment used in the early days. The mutoscope, the zoescope and the magic lantern. The visual explanation had make it so easy to understand 👍

 

It was worth spend time sitting down and listen to the directors describing how they had used the different elements to bring about the desired effects to the audiences.

E.g. the use of music to successfully to draw the emotion out from the audience; the use of camera panning effect to create suspense and fear. Now, I got to better understand why there were certain scenes in dramas left such deep impressions - visual is not enough, but the rest have important roles to play!

Get to appreciate even more how directors have used sound and camera angles to make a difference to a movie, making it a successful one.
